Memantine was developed as a monotherapeutic and is approved for the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer dementia. As memantine targets a different neurotransmitter system than the cholinesterase (ChE) inhibitors, a combination of both treatment strategies was investigated, to prove safety and efficacy of a combination therapy with cholinesterase inhibitors.
